What is Value Management?
Value Management (VM) is a structured, creative, and team-based methodology designed to optimise value in products, services, projects, processes, and organisations. VM is defined in BS EN 12973:2020 (Framework), BS EN 17952:2024 (Function Analysis) and other standards.
VM focuses on achieving the optimum balance between function, performance, quality, safety, risk, and cost. Striking this balance ensures that value is maximised.
Where VM is Applied
- Widely used across industry, public, and not-for-profit sectors.
- Involves facilitated team working and encourages innovation.
- Typically delivers a return on investment (ROI) ranging from 10:1 to 100:1+
Key Features of VM
- VM is a globally recognised professional discipline, supported by dedicated institutions (such as the Institute of Value Management, UK) and an established framework of professional qualifications:
- Qualified Value Associate (QVA)
- Professional in Value Management (PVM)
- Trainer in Value Management (TVM)
- Best Practice VM (BP-VM) is achieved when:
- A range of VM methods, aligned with BS EN 12973:2020, BS EN 17952:2024 and related standards, are applied.
- These methods are delivered by Professionals in Value Management (PVMs), qualified under the Value for Europe Training and Certification System (V4E-TCS), with proven experience in practice.
- VM applies a Function Thinking mindset to:
- Define clear objectives.
- Enhance individual and organisational performance.
- Deliver measurable returns on investment.
- Ensure real, sustainable value is achieved.
