02. The Consulting Industry

As consultants, a good understanding of the industry gives us a real edge in our careers. It helps us choose what to specialise in (professional disciplines and client industries), our preferred role (as external, internal or independent consultants) and even where to work (opportunities vary considerably from country to country). It can also help us select a consulting firm to work for and manage consulting engagements when we are working on the ‘other side of the fence’ on behalf of a client.

The objective of this module is to give you a good practical understanding of:

  • The consulting profession
  • The structure of the consulting industry

Please attend the webinar and complete the following activities…

2.1 The Consulting Profession

As professional consultants we help clients create value by investigating problems, identifying and assessing options and implementing solutions. Consultants works in a number of different roles in wide variety of professional fields and industries. As professional consultants we need to be committed to excellence as well as working within an ethical framework.

2.2 Structure of the Consulting Industry

The consulting industry is highly fragmented and serves many different sectors (private, public and not-for-profit) and industries. Large consulting firms employing thousands of people find themselves competing with or even working alongside internal consultancies, smaller specialists firms and independent consultants. The industry is constantly changing with new firms entering the business, the occasional older firm going bust and new products and services launched the whole time. This makes the consulting industry a vibrant and exciting place to work. However this complexity is a challenge for both clients seeking the best professionals to help them as well as consultants seeking a role and progression within the industry.

2.3 Self Assessment Consulting Questionnaires

Here are a couple of self assessment assignments to help you plan your consulting career. Please print, complete, score (as appropriate) and email to your tutor for a discussion. You may find easiest to photograph the printed pdfs with your smartphone which you can then email.
